Start Here: Guide to Writing Academic Genres
Whenever you write, you write in a genre. So knowing your genre is a key factor in successfully accomplishing an assignment’s expectations in terms of argument, arrangement, style, and sources, whether writing a sonnet, mystery, or academic essay. Genres embody much wisdom of thought and communication, but many of these principles remain latent and unrecognized, though expected in performance of academic writing. Thus, this guide clarifies generic expectations by offering three resources: generic outlines of academic essays, specific advice to overcome common problems in each assignment, and links to our instructional videos to learn more about the crafts and drafts of writing academic genres.
